The well made apron casting and gear cluster do not make it through the assembly line undamaged. At least 9 holes are drilled, using hand drills, after the apron has been fitted to the lathe complete with all its internal gears. Most of these holes go right through the casting walls, some are threaded and two on top that also pass through the saddle are reamed for the taper locating dowels. Four other holes locate the leadscrew cover brackets. No attempt whatsoever is made by the factory to remove any of the swarf produced inside the apron, and the large gear on the bottom right even has two teeth damaged by a drill bit as it breaks through the casting wall and runs into the gear. Its already had a good wash out and its still not got rid of all the iron swarf. Remember these methods of assembly are used over and over again, maybe on thousands of machines.
